Tui Cathedral: A Journey Through Time
Tui Cathedral has a long and interesting history. Building work started way back in the 12th century. Imagine, that's over 800 years ago! The earliest parts of the cathedral, like its northern entrance and the overall shape, come from this very old Romanesque period.
How the Cathedral Grew
As centuries passed, new parts were added and changed. The main front of the cathedral, called the facade, was built around the year 1225. This part shows off a newer style called Gothic. Later on, in 1699, the main chapel inside the church was finished by an architect named Castro Canseco.
Inside the Cathedral: Art and History
When you step inside Tui Cathedral, you'll see many interesting things. One of the most important is a large, decorated altarpiece called a retablo. This particular one is known as de la Expectacion. You'll also find a special altar filled with important religious items, located in the Chapel of the Relics.
What is a Cloister?
The cathedral also has a beautiful cloister. A cloister is an open-air walkway, usually with arches, that surrounds a courtyard. It's often found next to churches or monasteries. The cloister at Tui Cathedral is built in the Gothic style, just like parts of the main building. It's a peaceful place where people might have walked and thought quietly many years ago.
