The St. John the Baptist Cathedral (Spanish: Catedral de San Juan Bautista), also known as Tulancingo Cathedral, is a beautiful Catholic church in Mexico. It was first built way back in 1528 by a group of religious people called the Franciscan Order. This amazing building mixes grand and simple designs. It stands out in the historic center of Tulancingo, in the state of Hidalgo, right across from the main square called La Floresta.
History of the Cathedral
Early Beginnings
The first version of the cathedral was smaller. It was built by the Franciscans, who were important in spreading the Catholic faith throughout the area. They helped teach people about Christianity in this region.
Major Renovation and Design Changes
Later, in 1788, the church was made much bigger and updated. A famous architect named José Damián Ortiz de Castro led this project. He also helped design and finish the main Cathedral of Mexico City.
At that time, Mexico was changing its building styles. It was moving from a very fancy style called Baroque to a simpler, more classic style known as Neoclassic. This is why the cathedral's look changed during its renovation. It became less ornate and more balanced.
