The St. John the Baptist Cathedral (Spanish: Catedral de San Juan Bautista) is a beautiful Catholic church in Tulancingo, Mexico. It is also known as the Tulancingo Cathedral. This amazing building shows off the colonial architecture of Mexico. It was first built in 1528 by the Franciscan Order.

The cathedral stands out in the historic center of Tulancingo. You can find it right in front of the main square, La Floresta. It has a mix of grand and simple design elements.

History of the Cathedral

Building the Original Church

The first version of the church was smaller. It was built by Catholic Franciscans. These religious people were important in spreading Christianity throughout the area. They helped to teach people about their faith.

Changes Over Time

The church was later made much bigger and updated. This happened in 1788. The architect in charge was José Damián Ortiz de Castro. He also helped design and finish the famous Cathedral of Mexico City.

At that time, Mexico was changing its building styles. It was moving from the fancy Baroque style to the simpler Neoclassical style. This change in style can be seen in the cathedral's updated look.
