The Tullamore Distillery is a place in Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland, where Irish whiskey is made. A company called William Grant & Sons built it. It cost about €35 million to build. The distillery officially opened in September 2014.

This distillery is special because it's the first new one built on an empty piece of land in Ireland in over 100 years. It's also the first whiskey distillery to open in Tullamore since 1954. When it first opened, it could make up to 1.8 million litres of whiskey each year. This was done using four large containers called pot stills. The distillery was designed so that two more pot stills could be added later. This would double its ability to make whiskey to 3.6 million litres per year.

In 2017, the company invested another €25 million. They added a special plant to make "grain whiskey" and a place to bottle the whiskey. Now, the distillery can make all three types of whiskey needed for its famous Tullamore D.E.W. blended whiskey. These types are pot still, malt, and grain whiskey.

The Story of Tullamore Distillery

How the Original Distillery Started

The first Old Tullamore Distillery opened in Tullamore in 1829. Later, in the late 1800s, a man named Daniel E. Williams managed the distillery. He eventually owned it. He created a whiskey called Tullamore D.E.W.. The name D.E.W. came from his own initials. This whiskey became very popular.

Why the Old Distillery Closed

Even though the whiskey was successful, the old distillery faced tough times. It closed down in 1954. However, the Tullamore D.E.W. brand itself was kept alive. People still wanted to buy the whiskey.

A New Beginning for the Brand

In 2010, William Grant & Sons bought the Tullamore D.E.W. brand. At that time, it was the second biggest Irish whiskey brand in the world. Before the new distillery was built, another company made Tullamore D.E.W. for them. This happened at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork.

William Grant & Sons wanted to make more Tullamore D.E.W. whiskey. But they couldn't get enough from the Midleton Distillery. So, they decided to build their own distillery. They chose Tullamore, which was the original home of the brand. This new distillery helps them make all the whiskey they need.
