The Story of Tullamore D.E.W.
Where It All Began
Tullamore Dew first started being made in 1829. This happened in a town called Tullamore in County Offaly, Ireland. The original place where it was made was called the old Tullamore Distillery.
What D.E.W. Stands For
The special letters "D.E.W." in the name come from a person's initials. They belong to Daniel E. Williams. He was a very important person at the original distillery. First, he was the general manager, and later he became the owner.
Changes Over Time
In 1954, the first distillery in Tullamore closed down. Because there wasn't much whiskey left, the brand was sold in the 1960s. It went to another Irish company called John Powers & Son. Later, in the 1970s, the making of Tullamore Dew moved to the Midleton Distillery in County Cork. This happened after a few big Irish whiskey makers joined together.
Coming Back Home
In 2010, the brand was bought by William Grant & Sons. This company decided to build a brand-new distillery right outside Tullamore. The new distillery opened its doors in 2014. This was a big moment because it meant Tullamore Dew was being made in its home town again, after 60 years away!
Visiting Tullamore D.E.W.
In 2012, a special visitor centre opened in Tullamore. It's located in an old building that used to be part of the original distillery. At the centre, you can take guided tours to learn all about how Tullamore Dew is made and its history. These tours can last from about 50 minutes to several hours.
