Tullibardine Castle was an old castle found in the small village of Tullibardine. This village is about 2 miles north of Auchterarder in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. Castles like Tullibardine were important buildings in the past, often used for defense and as homes for powerful families.

History of Tullibardine Castle

Early Days and the Murray Family

The land where Tullibardine Castle stood became part of the Murray family's property a long time ago. This happened when Ada de Strathearn, who was married to William Murray, received part of the Tullibardine lands from her aunt. The castle itself was built sometime between the late 1200s and the early 1300s. This was a time when many castles were being built across Scotland.

Royal Visits to the Castle

Tullibardine Castle was important enough to be visited by Scottish royalty.

Mary, Queen of Scots' Visits

Mary, Queen of Scots, a famous Scottish queen, visited the castle more than once. She came to see William Murray of Tullibardine on November 16, 1562. She also visited again on December 31, 1566. These visits show that the Murray family and their castle were well-known and respected by the royal family.

King James VI's Celebrations

Later, King James VI of Scotland also visited Tullibardine Castle many times. He was a frequent guest of John Murray, 1st Earl of Tullibardine. A very special event happened at the castle on June 21, 1591. King James VI and his wife, Anne of Denmark, attended the wedding of Lilias Murray and John Grant.

During this wedding celebration, King James VI even took part in a masque. A masque was a type of entertainment with music, dancing, and costumes. He performed with his valet, who was a personal attendant. They wore special Venetian carnival masks and helmets. Their costumes were made of red and pink taffeta, a fancy fabric. King James VI also spent New Year's Day at Tullibardine in 1592.

The Castle's End

Sadly, Tullibardine Castle no longer stands today. It was taken down in 1883. While the castle is gone, its history and the stories of the important people who visited it remain.
