Who Was William Murray?
William Murray was the son of another William Murray, who also lived at Tullibardine. His mother was Katherine Campbell. His family was well-known and powerful in Scotland.

Visits from Mary, Queen of Scots
Mary, Queen of Scots, visited him at his home, Tullibardine, twice. She came on November 16, 1562, and again on December 31, 1566. These visits show how important he was to the Queen.
Becoming a Knight and Royal Official
In 1565, when Lord Darnley was given new titles at Stirling Castle, William Murray was one of 15 men who became knights. This was a great honor. He also became the "foud of Shetland" on July 29, 1565. This job was like a manager who collected taxes and fees for the King or Queen in the Shetland Islands.
Chasing the Earl of Bothwell
In 1567, William Murray and William Kirkcaldy of Grange went on a chase! They took ships to hunt down the Earl of Bothwell all the way to Shetland. Bothwell was a powerful nobleman who was involved in many political events at the time. Even though Bothwell escaped, Murray continued to chase him for a while. Some of the ships used in the chase came from Dundee, like the James, the Primrose, and the Robert.
Working as a Royal Accountant
William Murray's sister was Annabell Murray, Countess of Mar (died 1603). She was very important because she was in charge of looking after the young James VI of Scotland at Stirling Castle.
Later, William Murray became the "Comptroller of the King's household." This meant he was in charge of managing the King's money and household expenses. In March 1579, he made sure that wine merchants sold wine to the King's house at fair prices. Some merchants tried to argue, but the King's council made them follow the rules.
Later Years and Family
William Murray was the Comptroller of Scotland for several years. In August 1580, he had to step down from his job because he was not well. He suffered from gout, a painful illness. King James VI then gave the job to William's son, John. The King's letter praised William for his loyal service.
William Murray died in 1583.
William Murray's Family
William Murray married Agnes Graham. She was the daughter of William Graham, 2nd Earl of Montrose. William and Agnes had several children:
- John Murray, 1st Earl of Tullibardine
- Captain George Murray, who traveled with King James VI to Denmark.
- Alexander Murray of Drumdewan.
Agnes Graham's sister, Jonet Graham, married William Murray's cousin, Andrew Murray of Balvaird. Their children included:
- Andrew Murray of Balvaird (died 1590).
- Patrick Murray of Geanies.
- David Murray, 1st Viscount of Stormont (died 1631).
William Murray also had a brother named John Murray of Pardewis.
