A Look Back at Tulls Corner
Tulls Corner has a long and interesting past. It's located in an area called Quindocqua, close to the Quindocqua United Methodist Church. Long ago, Tulls Corner was a busy and active place. It had many homes and different kinds of businesses.
How Tulls Corner Began
Tulls Corner started as a simple crossroads store even before the American Revolutionary War. This war was fought between Great Britain and its thirteen colonies in North America. The community slowly grew bigger. It reached its busiest time shortly after the American Civil War ended. The Civil War was a big conflict in the United States from 1861 to 1865.
The Tull Family's Influence
The community is named after the Tull family. This family came to Somerset County around 1666 from Northampton County, Virginia. Thomas Tull IV, who lived from 1750 to 1818, helped create the settlement. It then became known as Tulls Corner. He owned a gristmill, which is a place where grain is ground into flour. He was also a farmer and owned ships.
What Tulls Corner Was Like
At its busiest, Tulls Corner had several homes. It also had three or four stores, a post office, and a shoe shop. There was a blacksmith shop, where metal items were made, and a tannery, which prepared animal hides. A school and a church were also nearby. Later, more businesses were added. These included a saloon, a millinery shop (which sold hats), a barrel factory, and a tomato cannery.
Changes Over Time
After its busiest period, Tulls Corner became less active and quieter. The Tull family eventually left the area. Today, the name of the community is not as well-known as it once was.
