What's in a Name? The Story of Tunceli
Before it was called Tunceli, this city had other names. During the time of the Ottoman Empire, it was known as Kalan or Mameki. The name Tunceli is quite new. It means "bronze fist" in the Turkish language. The word tunç means "bronze," and eli means "fist."
Why Did the Name Change?
The area where Tunceli is located was once called Dersim. In 1935, the government changed the name of the province to Tunceli. The city of Kalan became the capital of this new province in 1938. It was also renamed Tunceli.
Some people believe the name Dersim comes from Kurdish or Zazaki words. They think der means "door" and sim means "silver." So, Dersim could mean "silver door." There has been some disagreement about whether the city should be called Dersim or Tunceli. In 2019, local leaders tried to change the name back to Dersim. However, the governor said this was against the law.
A Look Back: Tunceli's History
Tunceli, known as Kalan in the past, was part of the Dersim region. This was during the time of the Ottoman Empire. In 1847, Dersim became a special administrative area called a sanjak. Its main town was Hozat.
Tunceli in Modern Turkey
After the country of Turkey was formed in 1923, Tunceli Province was created in 1935. In 1946, the old town of Kalan was officially renamed Tunceli. It then became the capital city of the province.
Tunceli was a key area during a time when the Turkish government wanted to make everyone in the country speak Turkish and follow Turkish culture. This led to a conflict known as the Dersim rebellion.
Today, Tunceli is known for its excellent schools. It often ranks very high in national education results.
