The Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts was a special place in Stone Mountain, Georgia. It was a performing arts center supported by the Shakur Family Foundation. The center aimed to give young people chances to explore the arts.
It offered classes in drama, dance, and creative writing. They also had a Performing Arts Day Camp for teens aged 12 to 18. The center was named after the famous American hip hop artist Tupac Amaru Shakur. His mother, Afeni Shakur, founded it.
History of the Arts Center
The center was started in 1997 by Tupac Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur. She wanted to keep her son's memory alive. The goal was to offer great arts training to young people. This included students who faced challenges like poverty. Many students improved their artistic skills here. Some even found part-time jobs.
In July 1999, the foundation held its first summer camp. It started with twenty campers. The camp grew bigger each year. On June 11, 2005, the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts opened its Peace Garden and visitor center. The Peace Garden was a tribute to Tupac Shakur and others who had passed away.
In 2006, a music video for the song "Pac's Life" was filmed at the center. This song was from Tupac's album. Also in 2006, Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, visited Africa. She helped create a connection between the Center and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
After 2006, the foundation added more programs. These included after-school activities, dance classes, and cultural exchange programs. The cost for these programs was similar to joining local sports teams. The foundation also held birthday concerts for Tupac every year since 2009.
Creative Programs Offered
The foundation provided many exciting programs. They offered classes in acting, dance, and after-school activities. They also had yearly leadership and arts programs. The center even set up cultural exchanges with students from Japan and South Africa.
Closure of the Center
In August 2015, Afeni Shakur sold the land where the center was located. She sold it for $1.2 million. On May 2 of the next year, Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, passed away.
