What is Turkey Creek?
Turkey Creek is a very long development, stretching for about 3 miles (4.8 km) (about 4.8 kilometers). It runs right next to a busy section of Interstates 40 and 75. This means it's easy to get to from the highway. The development is located between the Lovell Road and Campbell Station Road exits.
Shopping and More
Inside Turkey Creek, you'll find several shopping centers. One of the biggest is The Pinnacle at Turkey Creek. It used to be called Colonial Pinnacle & Promenade. This part of Turkey Creek has about 65 stores and places to eat. It covers a very large area, about 654,000 square feet (60,800 m2) (about 60,757 square meters).
Another part, Colonial Promenade, has 20 stores. It covers about 280,776 square feet (26,084.9 m2) (about 26,084 square meters). Both of these large shopping areas were built by a company called Colonial Properties.
Nature and Green Space
Even though Turkey Creek is a big business area, it also has a natural side. There's a greenway (a path for walking or biking) that runs through the area. This greenway is next to the Turkey Creek wetland. A wetland is a special area of land that is often wet, like a swamp or marsh. The wetland here is cared for by the Izaak Walton League, a group that works to protect nature.
How Turkey Creek Started
The idea for Turkey Creek began in 1995. A group of investors and developers, who called themselves Turkey Creek Land Partners, bought a large piece of land. This group was led by John Turley and Kerry Sprouse.
Buying the Land
They paid $7 million to buy 410 acres (170 ha) (about 166 hectares) of land. This land was undeveloped, meaning it didn't have any buildings on it yet. It was located south of the interstate highway.
Building the Area
The developers spent $30 million to build things like roads and other important structures within the project. The government also helped by spending money on bigger road improvements. About $50 million was spent to widen the Interstate, change the Lovell Road exit, and improve local streets. The city of Knoxville spent about $5 million, and Knox County government added $1 million. This money helped extend Parkside Drive, a main road in the area, from Lovell Road to Campbell Station Road.
