Turkey Creek (Spring River tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Turkey Creek is a cool stream that flows through parts of Missouri and Kansas in the United States. It's like a smaller river that eventually joins a bigger one called the Spring River.

Discover Turkey Creek's Journey

Turkey Creek starts in Newton County, Missouri, high up at about 1,170 feet (that's like 357 meters) above sea level. This starting point is called its headwaters.

Where Does It Flow?

From its start, the stream flows north into Jasper County. It even goes under a big road called I-44 near a town called Duenweg. After that, Turkey Creek turns and flows northwest, passing through the northern part of Joplin. In Joplin, it goes under more important roads like U.S. Route 71 and Missouri Route 43.

The stream keeps flowing west and northwest, past a community named Belleville. Eventually, it crosses the state line and enters southeastern Kansas.

Joining the Spring River

Turkey Creek's journey ends when it meets the Spring River. This meeting point, called a confluence, is about half a mile west of the Missouri-Kansas border. At this spot, the elevation is around 814 feet (about 248 meters).

Why the Name "Turkey Creek"?

Have you ever wondered how Turkey Creek got its name? It's quite simple! The stream was named because of the many wild turkeys that lived along its banks. Imagine seeing groups of these cool birds as you walked along the creek!
