How the Town Began
Long ago, Turkey Town started near an older place called Turkeytown. This older place was a village where the Cherokee people lived.
A Post Office Opens
In 1828, a post office opened in Turkey Town. A post office is a place where people can send and receive letters and packages. This post office stayed open for many years, helping the people who lived there. However, it closed down in 1861.
How Turkey Town Got Its Name
The community of Turkey Town got its name from the older Cherokee village nearby. That village was named to honor a very important and respected Cherokee leader named Little Turkey.
