Turnberry Towers is a pair of tall buildings in Winchester, Nevada. These buildings are called "twin towers" because they look very similar. They are close to the famous Las Vegas Strip.

The idea for these towers started in 1998. At first, they were planned to be much taller. Later, a company called Turnberry Associates bought the land. They decided to build two towers, but the start of construction was delayed. This happened because of tough economic times after the September 11 attacks.

When the economy got better, the project was made even bigger. It was then named Turnberry Towers. Building the first tower began in June 2005. It was finished in 2007. The second tower was completed a year later in 2008.

History of Turnberry Towers

Early Ideas for the Towers

In November 1998, a builder named Bruce Stark had an idea. He wanted to build two very tall condominium towers. Condominiums are like apartments that people buy and own. His project was called Great Masters. It would have 56 floors and 592 homes.

This project was planned for a large area of land. It was located near the Sahara Las Vegas hotel. At the time, Great Masters was going to be one of the tallest residential buildings in the United States. It was planned to be about 724 feet (221 m) tall.

Plans Change and Grow

In 2000, Bruce Stark sold the land to Turnberry Associates. This company had already built other tall buildings nearby. Turnberry Associates announced new plans for the site. They wanted to build Madison Towers. This project would have two 25-story towers.

The Madison Towers would offer smaller homes. They would also cost less than Turnberry's other buildings. Construction was supposed to start in 2001. However, the project was put on hold. This was due to a slowdown in sales. The economy was not doing well after the events of September 11, 2001.

By 2004, the economy had improved. Turnberry decided to make the project bigger. They planned for two 40-story towers. The project was also given a new name: Turnberry Towers. Robert M. Swedroe Architects designed the buildings.

In March 2005, Turnberry announced the final plans. There would be two 45-story towers. Together, they would have 636 homes. Sales for the homes began that same month. Construction was set to start very soon.

Building the Towers

Construction of the first tower began in June 2005. Most of the homes in this tower were already sold. About half of the homes in the second tower were also sold. The homes started at around $500,000. The whole project was expected to cost $500 million.

Turnberry Place Construction was the main company building the towers. In October 2005, there was an accident. Some parts of the second floor collapsed, and seven construction workers were hurt. In March 2006, work began to prepare for the second tower.

The first tower, called the East Tower, reached its full height in October 2006. By February 2007, the second tower was also very tall. Many buyers were people from southern California. They wanted a second home in Las Vegas. About 800 construction workers were on the site every day.

The East Tower was almost finished by May 2007. The first people started moving in during July 2007. The West Tower reached its full height in June 2007. It was completely finished in 2008. Each of the 45-story towers has 318 homes. Both towers stand about 453 feet (138 m) tall.

Life at Turnberry Towers

By 2009, the economy was going through a tough time. This period was known as the Great Recession. Because of this, some homes in Turnberry Towers remained unsold. The property began renting out these empty units.

In 2011, a real estate company bought the remaining unsold homes. There were 279 units left. Most of these were in the West Tower.

Turnberry Towers offers many features for its residents. Both towers have their own swimming pools. They also have large fitness centers. Each fitness center is about 2,500 sq ft (230 m2).
