Turtle Lake is a lake located in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is found in the Nipissing District, within an area known as Temagami. This lake stretches from east to west and is known for its interesting history related to mining and logging.

About Turtle Lake

Turtle Lake is a freshwater lake in Strathy Township, which is part of the Temagami region. It is about 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) long and 0.4 kilometers (0.25 miles) wide. The lake sits about 298 meters (978 feet) above sea level.

Where is Turtle Lake?

The lake is located inside the property of the Sherman Mine. This mine used to be a large iron ore mine. Turtle Lake lies between two big mining areas, known as the South and East pits of the mine.

History of the Lake

Turtle Lake has a connection to the history of logging in the area. Along its southern shore, there was once an abandoned "jack ladder." A jack ladder was a special machine used to pull logs out of the water. These logs were then floated across the lake to the former Milne sawmill. The sawmill was located in a place called the Milne Townsite, where wood was cut into lumber.
