Tuupovaara was once a separate town in Finland. It was known as Kovero until 1913. This area is located in the beautiful North Karelia region.
On January 1, 2005, Tuupovaara joined with another area called Kiihtelysvaara. Both became part of the larger city of Joensuu.

Tuupovaara used to be its own local government area, called a municipality. It was founded in 1910. For many years, it managed its own services and local matters.
In 2005, it merged with Joensuu. This means it is now part of the bigger city.
