Tuxedo is a small community in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Tuxedo was first known as Lakewood.
The Story Behind the Name
The name Tuxedo comes from an old Native American phrase. This phrase was p tauk suttough. It means "place of the bears." Over time, the name changed into what we now call Tuxedo.
A Look Back in Time
In the early 1900s, the community was called Lakewood. However, there was another town in North Carolina with a similar name. To avoid confusion, Lakewood changed its name to Tuxedo. This new name came from a town in New York State.
A large factory, the Green River Manufacturing plant, opened in 1910. It provided jobs for about 250 people living nearby. In that same year, a post office called "Tuxedo" was set up. It served the community until 1993. The factory, later known as WestPoint Pepperell–Tuxedo, closed its doors in 1990.
Tuxedo is also famous for its summer camps. Camp Arrowhead is one of these camps. It was recognized as a historic place in 2005. Other popular camps in Tuxedo include Mondamin, Green Cove, Talisman, Greystone, and Falling Creek Camp.
