Twadell Mountain is a mountain located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of New York. It stands about 2,293 feet (699 meters) tall. You can find it north-northeast of East Branch in Delaware County. Nearby mountains include Rock Rift Mountain to the north-northwest and Baxter Mountain to the east.
In May 1910, a 45-foot (14-meter) tall windmill tower was built on Twadell Mountain. This tower helped spot forest fires. Later, in 1919, a stronger 47-foot (14-meter) steel tower replaced the windmill. This tower stopped being used for fire watching in 1972. It is still there today but is on private land and closed to visitors.
Exploring Twadell Mountain's Past
In May 1910, a special 45-foot (14-meter) windmill tower was built on Twadell Mountain. The Forest, Fish and Game Commission bought and built it. This tower helped protect forests from fires.
By 1916, a small cabin was built for the fire observer. This person lived on the mountain to watch for smoke. The cabin was smaller than later standard designs.
Then, in 1919, a new 47-foot (14-meter) steel tower took its place. This was an Aermotor LS40 tower, known for being strong. The tower stopped its fire-watching duties in 1972. After that, it was sold to the owner of the land. The tower is still standing today. However, it is on private property and not open to the public.
