The twospot bristletooth or twospot surgeonfish (scientific name: Ctenochaetus binotatus) is a type of fish that lives in the ocean. It belongs to a group of fish called Acanthuridae, which includes surgeonfishes, unicornfishes, and tangs. This fish can be found in many parts of the Indo-Pacific Ocean.

What is a Twospot Bristletooth?

The twospot bristletooth is a fascinating fish with a unique look. It was first officially described in 1955 by an American fish expert named John Ernest Randall. He found it in Batangas Bay, near the island of Luzon in the Philippines.

Why is it Called "Twospot"?

The name binotatus means "twice marked." This is because the fish has two clear black spots on its body. One spot is near the back of its top fin (dorsal fin), and the other is near the back of its bottom fin (anal fin). These spots help identify this special fish.

What Does This Fish Look Like?

The twospot bristletooth has a brown body. Its head and chest are covered with light-colored spots. You can also see pale lines running horizontally along its sides. A cool feature is its blue eyes! The two dark spots, one on the dorsal fin and one on the anal fin, are very easy to see.

This fish has a dorsal fin with 8 strong spines and 24 to 27 soft rays. Its anal fin has 3 spines and 22 to 25 soft rays. The body of the fish is quite deep, more than half of its total length. Adult twospot bristletooths have a tail fin that looks like a crescent moon. This fish can grow up to about 22 centimeters (almost 9 inches) long.

Where Does the Twospot Bristletooth Live?

This fish lives in a very large area called the Indo-Pacific. This includes the Indian Ocean, from the coast of East Africa (like Kenya and South Africa) all the way to the Andaman Sea. In the Pacific Ocean, it lives as far east as the Tuamotu Islands and Mangareva. You can find it from southern Japan down to New South Wales in Australia.

The twospot bristletooth prefers to live in areas with corals and rubble. It can be found in deep lagoons and on reefs facing the open ocean. They usually live at depths of up to 60 meters (about 197 feet).

How Does This Fish Live?

Twospot bristletooths are usually found swimming alone. They have a special way of eating. They use their mouths to scoop up a thin layer of tiny bits of food and single-celled algae from surfaces. This includes tiny organisms like Gambierdiscus toxicus, which can produce a toxin called ciguatera. Because they eat these organisms, the twospot bristletooth can become part of the "ciguatera chain," which means the toxin can pass along to other animals that eat them.

Is This Fish Used by People?

Yes, the twospot bristletooth is sometimes caught for the aquarium trade. People like to keep them in home aquariums because of their unique appearance. In some places, like Thailand, this fish is also caught and eaten as food.
