Tyche facts for kids

Tyche (pronounced TIE-kee) was an important goddess in Greek mythology. She was known as the goddess of luck and fortune. Tyche decided if people or cities had good luck or bad luck. Her name actually means "luck" in Greek!
Tyche was often shown wearing a special crown. This crown looked like the walls of a city. She also carried a large horn filled with good things. This horn, called a cornucopia, showed her power to bring wealth and good fortune. Sometimes, she would share these good things with others. According to the Greek poet Hesiod, Tyche was the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys.
Who Were the Oceanids?
Tyche was one of the Oceanids. The Oceanids were a group of goddesses. They were the many daughters of the Titans Tethys and Okeanos. The famous Greek poet Hesiod wrote about the Oceanids in his work called the Theogony. Tyche and her sister Eudora were often seen together. They represented the idea of good fortune and plenty coming together.
Tyche in Roman Mythology
In Roman mythology, there was a goddess very similar to Tyche. Her name was Fortuna. Like Tyche, Fortuna was also the goddess of luck and fate. She played a big role in Roman beliefs about destiny.
