Range of the Tyler's toadlet

The Tyler's toadlet is a small ground frog found in Australia. You can find it in coastal areas of southern New South Wales and eastern Victoria.

What's in a Name?

The special part of its name, tyleri, is a way to honor Michael J. Tyler. He was an Australian scientist who studied reptiles and amphibians, like frogs.

What Does It Look Like?

This toadlet is quite large for its type, growing up to about 3.5 centimeters (about 1.4 inches) long. It can be dark or light brown. You might see some orange or yellow spots on its back.

It has a pale, light-colored area on its head, like a crown. This "crown" is not as clear as on some other toadlets. The Tyler's toadlet also has big glands behind its eyes, called parotoid glands. These glands can release a substance that protects the frog.

Look closely, and you might spot a pale yellow patch in its armpits. The underside of this frog is a dark blue or black color. It also has a bright yellow patch on its thighs. This toadlet looks very much like another frog called the smooth toadlet.

Where Does It Live and What Does It Do?

Tyler's toadlets like to live near dams and swamps. They can be found in different places like heathland (areas with small shrubs), forests, and even cleared land. Scientists are still working to figure out exactly where all these toadlets live.

We know they are common south of Jervis Bay Territory. There are also some groups of them between Jervis Bay and Sydney. Some records show them living north of Sydney, but it's sometimes hard to tell them apart from other similar frogs.

Male Tyler's toadlets make a deep, long "arrrrk" sound. They usually call from spring to autumn, which is their breeding season. Interestingly, they often call from several meters away from the water.
