Typhoon Vamco facts for kids
Typhoon Vamco, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Ulysses, was a very powerful storm. It caused some of the worst flooding in Metro Manila since Typhoon Ketsana in 2009.
What Was Typhoon Vamco?
Typhoon Vamco was the twenty-second named storm and tenth typhoon of the 2020 Pacific typhoon season. It was a strong storm, similar to a Category 4 hurricane. This means it had very high winds and brought a lot of rain.
How Vamco Started
Vamco began as a tropical depression. This is an early stage of a storm, like a small swirling cloud system. It formed northwest of Palau, which is a country made of islands in the Pacific Ocean. The storm slowly moved northwest. It kept getting stronger as it traveled over the ocean. Eventually, it made landfall in Quezon, a province in the Philippines. "Landfall" means the center of the storm crossed onto land.
Vamco's Impact
Typhoon Vamco brought heavy rains and strong winds. This caused widespread flooding, especially in areas like Metro Manila. The flooding was so severe that it reminded people of the floods caused by Typhoon Ketsana over ten years earlier. A government group in the Philippines, called the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, reported that the typhoon greatly affected many people. Sadly, some lives were lost, and others were reported missing because of the storm's powerful impact.
