Tyrell Biggs (born December 22, 1960) is an American former professional boxer. He competed from 1984 to 1998. He even fought for the heavyweight boxing title in 1987. Before turning pro, he was a very successful amateur boxer. He won a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He also earned a bronze medal at the 1983 Pan American Games. In 1982, he won a gold medal at the World Championships. All these wins were in the super heavyweight division.

Early Life and Sports Beginnings

Tyrell Biggs was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He first played sports as a basketball player at West Philadelphia High. He was a key player for his high school team. In 1978, his team won the Public League and City championships. They even had a winning streak of 68 games. One of his teammates, Gene Banks, later played in the NBA. After his first successes in boxing, he officially changed his name to "Tyrell."

Amateur Boxing Career

Biggs had great success as an amateur boxer. His first big win was a gold medal in 1981. He won the United States National Boxing Championships. He won this super-heavyweight title again in 1982.

In 1982, he also won the World Championships in Munich, West Germany. In the final match, he beat Francesco Damiani from Italy. Damiani had previously defeated the famous boxer Teofilo Stevenson.

In 1983, Biggs won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games. He lost in the semi-final to Jorge Luis Gonzalez. Biggs also won a close match against Angel Milian from Cuba.

In 1984, Biggs won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In the quarter-finals, he defeated Lennox Lewis, who would later become an Olympic gold medalist and professional world champion. Biggs then beat Damiani again in the Olympic final.

Tyrell Biggs ended his amateur career with an impressive record. He won 108 matches, lost 6, and had 4 draws.

Professional Boxing Career

After his Olympic victory, Biggs became a professional boxer. His first professional fight was on November 15, 1984. He won a 6-round decision against Mike Evans at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

During his career, he faced many famous boxers. These included Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Francesco Damiani, James "Quick" Tillis, Ossie Ocasio, Riddick Bowe, Tony Tubbs, Buster Mathis, Jr., and Larry Donald. He finished his career in 1998. He did not win a major title, but he was considered a top contender for many years.

Biggs vs. Tyson Fight

One of Biggs' most famous professional fights was against Mike Tyson. This was for Tyson's undisputed heavyweight title in 1987. Biggs and Tyson had a rivalry before the fight. Biggs tried to use his boxing skills and movement to win. However, Tyson was very strong and kept landing powerful punches. The referee stopped the fight in the seventh round.

Outside the Boxing Ring

In 1993, Tyrell Biggs appeared on the TV show American Gladiators. He competed in the Gold Medal Challenge of Champions. He lost to Bill Johnson, who was a 1984 Olympic gold medalist in skiing. A documentary film about Tyrell Biggs' life is currently being made.
