Amateur Career
Before becoming a professional, Tyrone had a long amateur career. He fought in over 90 matches. He won 82 of those fights and lost only 12.
Starting as a Professional
Brunson began his professional boxing career in 2005. His very first fight was a knockout win against Kevin Carey. This fight lasted only 25 seconds! That same year, he had seven more fights. All of them ended with Tyrone winning by knockout in the first round. Four of these fights lasted less than 30 seconds. His fastest win was in just 17 seconds against Terry Rork.
His knockout streak continued into 2006. In his first fight of that year, he beat James Morrow. This win earned him the Mid American middleweight title.
Chasing the Knockout Record
By early 2007, Tyrone Brunson had won 14 fights in a row. All of these wins were by first-round knockout. He was getting close to a special record.
North American Record
Brunson was aiming for the unofficial North American record. This record was held by Arthur "Young Otto" Susskind. Susskind had 15 first-round knockout wins in a row. On March 9, 2007, Tyrone equaled Otto's record. He knocked out David Johnson in 52 seconds of the first round.
A few seconds later, Johnson was knocked down by Brunson's punches. Johnson decided he could not continue. The referee ruled it a TKO (Technical Knockout) win for Brunson.
On May 5, 2007, Brunson broke the North American record. He knocked out Tony Watson in just 100 seconds of the first round. This made his record a perfect 16 wins and no losses.
World Record Challenge
Next, Brunson set his sights on the world record. This record was held by Edwin Valero of Venezuela. Valero had 18 first-round knockouts in a row. Tyrone matched Valero's record on June 8, 2007. He won against Jamie Waru in New Zealand.
Then, on March 8, 2008, Tyrone Brunson made history. He got his record-breaking 19th first-round knockout in a row! He defeated Francis McKechnai in just 72 seconds.
The Streak Ends
On August 15, 2008, Tyrone Brunson's amazing streak ended. In his 20th professional fight, he had a draw against Antonio Soriano. This meant the fight ended with no clear winner.
Later, on December 4, 2009, Brunson fought Carson Jones. Jones knocked Brunson down for the first time in his career. The referee stopped the fight in the third round. Jones won by TKO.
In 2013, another boxer named Ali Raymi broke Brunson's record. Raymi achieved 20 first-round knockouts in a row.
Later Career and Comeback
After his record-breaking streak, Brunson faced some tough losses. On October 31, 2015, he lost a fight to Caleb Plant.
2017 Comeback
After a few difficult years, Tyrone Brunson made a strong comeback in 2017. He won two important fights. He beat Brandon Quarles and then had a big win against Kermit Cintron. Cintron was a respected and powerful boxer. In what was called "Philly's Fight of the Year," Brunson was knocked down twice. But he fought back and knocked Cintron down three times.
