In early 2017, Tyson played for Richmond's reserve team in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was a strong forward, kicking 13 goals in his first eight games. In June 2017, he was moved up to the main team. He made his AFL debut two weeks later in July 2017. In his first game, he kicked two goals. He played one more AFL game before returning to the VFL.

Tyson played in the VFL Grand Final with Richmond's reserves team in 2017. He finished the 2017 season with two AFL games and two goals. He also played 19 VFL games, kicking 33 goals. This was the second-highest at the club.

In 2018, Tyson continued to play well in the VFL. He kicked six goals in one game against North Melbourne. He was often considered for the senior AFL team but did not play any AFL games that year. He won the club's VFL goal-kicking award with 33 goals from 19 games.

After the 2018 season, Tyson wanted to move to another club. He asked to be traded to the Adelaide Crows. He felt he would get more chances to play at the AFL level there.
