About Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant

Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant is now owned by the National Trust. They have carefully restored the house to look like it did in the 1500s. Even though its name, Tŷ Mawr, means "Big House" in Welsh, it is quite small today.

What You Can See Inside

Inside the house, you will find old furniture from the past. There is also a special collection of Welsh Bibles. This includes William Morgan's own Bible from 1588. Visitors from all over the world have also donated Bibles in many different languages.

How to Get There

The easiest way to reach Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant is from the village of Penmachno. This village is about 4 miles from Betws-y-Coed. You can also get there from the A470 road. This road runs between Betws-y-Coed and Dolwyddelan.

Recent Closures

Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant closed its doors to visitors in early 2020. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, the collection of Bibles was moved. They were shown in a special exhibition at Chirk Castle.

The Name Wybrnant

The house is located near a stream called Afon Wybrnant. The stream's name is usually added to the house's name. This helps people know which "Tŷ Mawr" (Big House) they are talking about.

Meaning of the Name

The full meaning of "Wybrnant" is not completely known. The word nant means "small stream." Wybr is an old word for "sky" or "cloud." However, some people think the word comes from gwiber. This Welsh word means "adder" or "viper."

The Legend of the Gwiber

According to an old legend, a gwiber was a huge flying snake. Long ago, one of these mythical creatures was said to live in this very valley.
