The UK Young Academy (UKYA) is a special group in the United Kingdom. It brings together smart young people from different jobs and fields. These people are early in their careers. They work together to find new ideas and solve big problems. Their goal is to make a positive difference in the UK and around the world. They do this through projects and activities led by their members.
How the UK Young Academy Started
The Royal Society helped start the UK Young Academy. This happened in June 2022. Six other important groups from the UK and Ireland also helped. These groups are:
- British Academy
- Academy of Medical Sciences
- Learned Society of Wales
- Royal Academy of Engineering
- Royal Irish Academy
- Royal Society of Edinburgh
The Royal Society asked people to apply to become members.
How the UK Young Academy Works
The UK Young Academy first started working with the help of the Royal Society. It became the 50th group to join a worldwide network of Young Academies. The first group of 67 members began their work in January 2023. A second group of 32 new members joined in March 2024. Becoming a member is free. People are chosen through a special selection process. Members usually stay for five years.
An Executive Group leads the UK Young Academy. This group is made up of members who are chosen by others. They work with all the members to carry out the Academy's plans and projects. The seven members of this group were announced in 2023. They are:
- Jahangir Alom, Barts Health NHS Trust
- Sandeep Sandhu, Innovate UK Business Connect
- Denis Newman-Griffis, University of Sheffield
- Linda Oyama, Queen's University Belfast
- Edward Pyzer-Knapp, IBM
- Sophoe Meekings, University of York
- Amy Vincent, Newcastle University
