The UK Young Academy (UKYA) is a special group for young experts in the United Kingdom. It brings together researchers, professionals, and creative thinkers from many different areas. They work together to make a positive difference in the UK and around the world. The UKYA creates projects and activities to help solve big problems facing our world today.
Starting the UK Young Academy
The Royal Society helped start the UK Young Academy in June 2022. They worked with seven other important academies from across the UK and Ireland. These academies helped find the first members for the UKYA.
The partner academies are:
- The Royal Society
- The British Academy
- The Academy of Medical Sciences
- The Learned Society of Wales
- The Royal Academy of Engineering
- The Royal Irish Academy
- The Royal Society of Edinburgh
How the UK Young Academy Works
The UK Young Academy is currently supported by the Royal Society. It is the 50th "Young Academy" to join a worldwide group of similar organizations.
The first group of 67 members joined in January 2023. A second group of 32 new members was announced in March 2024. Becoming a member is free, but you have to be chosen through a special process. Members usually stay for five years.
A group called the Executive Group leads the UK Young Academy. These leaders are chosen by the members. They work with all the members to plan and carry out the academy's projects.
The seven members of the Executive Group, announced in 2023, are:
- Jahangir Alom, Barts Health NHS Trust
- Michael Berthaume, King's College London
- Denis Newman-Griffis, University of Sheffield
- Linda Oyama, Queen's University Belfast
- Edward Pyzer-Knapp, IBM
- Catarina Vicente, University of Oxford
- Amy Vincent, Newcastle University
