The USS New Jersey (BB-16) was a powerful warship called a Virginia-class battleship. It was part of the United States Navy. This ship was built in Quincy, Massachusetts, starting in May 1902 and launched in November 1904. It officially joined the Navy in May 1906.

About the Ship

The New Jersey was armed with large guns: four 12-inch guns and eight 8-inch guns. It could travel at a top speed of 19 knots (about 22 miles per hour). The ship was 435 feet (133 meters) long and had 23,000 horsepower. It cost about $3,405,000 to build.

Ship's Journey and Service

The New Jersey spent its entire time in the Atlantic Fleet. In late 1906, it helped during a time of change in Cuba. It also took part in the Jamestown Exposition in April and May 1907, which was a big event to show off new things.

Later that year, the ship joined the Great White Fleet. This was a group of U.S. Navy battleships that sailed all around the world. This amazing journey lasted until 1909. For the next five years, the New Jersey focused on training exercises during peacetime.

In April 1914, the New Jersey was involved in the occupation of Veracruz during the Mexican Revolution.

World War I and Beyond

During World War I, the New Jersey was used as a training ship. It helped prepare new sailors for their duties. After the war ended, the ship had an important job: it helped bring American soldiers back home from Europe.

The New Jersey was officially taken out of service in 1920. It was later chosen to be used in bombing tests in 1923. On September 5, 1923, the New Jersey was sunk off Cape Hatteras while being used as a target ship.
