History of the UW Tower
From Safeco to the University of Washington
The tower was first built for a company called Safeco Insurance. It was known as Safeco Plaza or the Safeco Building. Safeco used it as their main office for many years.
In 2006, the University of Washington bought the building from Safeco. They paid $130 million for it. Safeco moved out a year later, and the university moved in. The university also bought other buildings and parking areas nearby as part of the deal.
