Tesco products for sale in U Select

U Select is a chain of supermarkets in Hong Kong. It is run by China Resources Vanguard. It used to work with a British supermarket called Tesco.

A big part of the products sold in U Select stores come from other countries. For example, at least one-third of the items are from overseas. After Tesco stopped selling international products, U Select started selling items from Coles (from Australia) in December 2021. They also began selling products from Morrisons (from the UK) in May 2022.

What Makes U Select Special?

U Select stores have some unique features:

• About one-third of the products are from Coles or Morrisons. Before, they were from Tesco.
• Labels on the shelves show where the products come from. This helps you know if an item is local or imported.
• The prices at U Select are a little different from its sister store, Vanguard.

How Did U Select Start?

U Select has an interesting history:

• On August 18, 2013, China Resources Enterprise and Tesco decided to work together. They planned to create a joint company.
• This new company would operate in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. They would run different types of stores, like supermarkets.
• China Resources owned 80% of this new company, and Tesco owned 20%.

When Did U Select Stores Open?

• In April 2015, the very first U Select supermarkets opened their doors.
• The first two stores opened on April 18, 2015. One was on Prince Edward Road West and the other in Bellagio Mall.
• In June 2015, a third store opened in Shau Kei Wan.
• By September 17, 2015, the tenth U Select store was open. This one was in Kwun Tong.
• By May 2018, there were 37 U Select stores.
• In February 2021, the number grew to 67 stores.
• As of July 2021, there were 75 U Select stores across Hong Kong.

Types of U Select Stores

U Select has different types of stores, each with its own style.

U Select Stores

• These are the original U Select stores.
• They have a blue color theme.
• They were first meant to be a "value" store, meaning they offered good prices.
• In the past, these stores only accepted cash payments. They did not take credit or debit cards.

U Select Food Stores

• The first U Select Food store opened in June 2019 in South Horizons. More have opened since then.
• These stores focus more on foreign food products.
• They have fewer non-food items compared to the original U Select stores.
• U Select Food outlets use a black color theme.

U Select Mini Stores

• The first U Select Mini store opened on April 22, 2021, on King's Road.
• This store used to be a VanGO convenience store, which is part of the same company family.
• Currently, there are two U Select Mini stores. Both are located on Hong Kong Island.

Where Can You Find U Select?

Many of the first U Select locations were once Vanguard supermarkets. New locations have been added over time.
