Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam was an important Maya king. He ruled the city of Dos Pilas for many years. He was the fourth king of this powerful Maya city.

People also knew him by other names. These included Ruler 3, Master of Sun Jaguar, and Jewelled-head. His special title was "He of Five Captives." He ruled from 727 CE until his death in 741 CE.

Who Was Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam?

Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam became king after Itzamnaaj Kʼawiil. We do not know who his parents were. He took the throne in 727 CE.

It seems that the previous king, Itzamnaaj Kʼawiil, had a son. But this son was likely too young to rule. So, Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam probably became a regent. A regent is someone who rules for a young king until he is old enough.

One ancient carving shows Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam with a young boy. This boy was probably Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich. He later became the next king. This carving might show Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam guiding the young prince.

His Achievements as King

Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam was a strong ruler. He is famous for capturing Yichʼaak Bʼalam. Yichʼaak Bʼalam was the king of another city called Seibal. This was a big victory for Dos Pilas.

To celebrate his wins, Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam built special monuments. These monuments were placed in both Dos Pilas and Aguateca. They showed his power and success.

Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam died on May 28, 741 CE.

His Family Life

Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam married a woman named GI-Kʼawiil. She was a lady from the city of Cancuén. It appears they did not have any children together.
