Ucheldre Centre facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Ucheldre Centre is a cool arts centre in Holyhead, a town on Anglesey, which is an island in Wales. It's a place where people can enjoy different kinds of art and community events.

A Building with History

The Ucheldre Centre used to be a chapel. It was part of a convent for a group of nuns called the Bon Sauveur order. The main hall inside is very tall. It has a beautiful arched roof. A famous architect named Professor R M Butler from Dublin designed it. He designed many important buildings in Ireland.

The building looks like an old Romanesque style, but with a modern touch. It has a tall, square tower. Green stones from the local area were used to build it. In 1988, some local people saved the building. They stopped it from being torn down. Instead, they turned it into the arts centre we see today.

What Happens at the Centre?

The Ucheldre Centre is a special place for the community. It offers art events, shows, and other fun activities. These activities help people learn and enjoy culture. Before the Centre opened, Holyhead did not have a place for these kinds of events.

The main hall can hold up to 200 people for performances. New parts have been added to the building. These new areas have a gallery for art, a restaurant, and other useful rooms. Outside, the grounds have been made beautiful. There is an amphitheatre for plays and concerts. You can also see cool sculptures made by local artists. The main hall also works as a cinema. It shows popular films and less well-known movies on special film nights.

Famous Visitors and Awards

The Centre often has art shows. These have included art by famous Welsh artists like Kyffin Williams. The Ucheldre Centre has also received special awards. One of these is the Prince of Wales Award.
