Uhtred's Early Life and Role
Uhtred was born around the year 1120. His father was Fergus, a very important ruler in Galloway. It is thought that Uhtred's mother might have been Elizabeth Fitzroy. She was one of the many daughters of Henry I of England.
When Uhtred was a boy, he was sent to live at the court of King Malcolm IV of Scotland. This was a common practice at the time. Young nobles were sometimes sent as "hostages" to show loyalty. It also allowed them to learn about royal life and politics.
Becoming a Co-Ruler
In 1161, Uhtred's father, Prince Fergus, passed away. After his father's death, Uhtred became a co-ruler of Galloway. He shared power with his brother, Gille Brigte. This meant they ruled Galloway together.
Key Events in Uhtred's Reign
Uhtred and Gille Brigte were involved in important events during their rule. In 1174, they joined King William I of Scotland in an invasion of Northumberland. This invasion did not go well for the Scottish forces.
Challenges and Changes in Galloway
During the invasion, King William was captured. This event led to a rebellion in Galloway. The people of Galloway took this chance to rise up. They wanted to remove the Norman and English people from their land.
Sadly, during this time of unrest, Uhtred was harmed and passed away. His brother, Gille Brigte, and Gille Brigte's son, Máel Coluim, were involved in this tragic event. After Uhtred's death, Gille Brigte took full control of all of Galloway.
Uhtred's Family Life
Uhtred was married to a woman named Gunhilda of Dunbar. She was the daughter of Waltheof of Allerdale. Together, Uhtred and Gunhilda had several children.
