Uļjana Larionovna Semjonova (Russian: Ульяна Ларионовна Семёнова, romanized: Ul'yana Larionovna Semyonova; born 9 March 1952) is a retired Latvian basketball player. She played for the Soviet Union national team.

Uļjana Semjonova was one of the best women's basketball players in the world. She played mainly in the 1970s and 1980s. She was very tall, standing at about 2.13 meters (7 feet). She was also known for having very large feet, wearing a men's size 21 (US) shoe.

Playing Career Highlights

For most of her career, Uļjana played for a team called TTT Riga. This team was part of the Daugava Sports Society in the Soviet Union. With TTT Riga, she achieved amazing success.

Club Success

  • She won 15 championships in the Soviet Union.
  • Her team also won the European Champion's Cup 15 times. This shows how dominant her team was in Europe.

International Success

Uļjana Semjonova was also incredibly successful when playing for her country. She represented the Soviet Union in international games.

  • She won two Olympic Gold medals. These were at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
  • What's even more impressive is that she never lost a single game in official international competitions. This means she was undefeated throughout her international career!

After playing for TTT Riga for many years, she also played for other teams. She played for Tintoretto Getafe from 1987 to 1988. Then, she played for Valenciennes-Orchies from 1988 to 1989.

Awards and Recognition

Uļjana Semjonova received many important awards for her incredible basketball career.

  • In 1976, she was given the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. This was a high honor in the Soviet Union.
  • In 1993, she made history by becoming the first non-US woman to be included in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. This is a very special place for basketball legends.
  • She was also one of the first people to be inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
  • In 2007, she joined the FIBA Hall of Fame. FIBA is the international basketball federation.
  • That same year, she received the Lifetime Contribution to Sport award in Latvia. This award recognized her long and impactful career in sports.
