Her Early Life and Family
Ulla Dahlerup was born on March 21, 1942. She was born at Testrup Folk High School. This school is located south of Aarhus, Denmark. Her father, Erik Dahlerup, was the principal there. Her mother, Elin Høgsbro Appel, was a teacher.
Ulla has two sisters: Pil (born 1939) and Drude (born 1945). Pil became a literary historian. Drude became a researcher focused on women's rights. When Ulla was seven, her parents divorced. She and her sisters moved with their mother to Allerød.
Her Education and First Jobs
Ulla was always interested in folk high schools. However, she did not attend one as a student. After finishing her realeksam (a type of exam), she spent a year in Switzerland. She then worked in different jobs that did not require special skills. Later, she became a freelance journalist, a translator, and an author.
Her Start as a Writer
In the early 1960s, Ulla Dahlerup published two novels. These books were not very successful. But in 1969, she received a prize for her collection of short stories. This collection was called Sankt Jørgens gård.
Fighting for Women's Rights
In 1970, Ulla Dahlerup became well-known again. She joined the Individ og Samfund women's organization. She also became very involved in the Danish Red Stocking Movement. One famous event happened when she and 25 other women refused to pay the full bus fare. They paid only 80% of the fare. They did this because women's salaries were often only 80% of men's salaries at the time. This was a way to protest for equal pay.
In 1979, Ulla Dahlerup decided to leave the women's movement. She felt it had become too focused on certain political ideas.
Her Later Political Work
Around the year 2000, Ulla Dahlerup became involved in politics again. She joined the Danish People's Party. This party has specific views on various national issues. In 2004, she was a candidate for the European Parliament for the Danish People's Party.
