What is an Unincorporated Community?
An unincorporated community is a place where people live that isn't officially a city or town. It doesn't have its own mayor or city council. Instead, the county government takes care of services like roads and public safety. Think of it as a neighborhood that's part of a larger county area.
The Story of Ultra's Railway
For many years, a railway line ran right through Ultra. This line was part of a big company called the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Trains used to travel along this track, connecting different places.
Changes to the Railway Line
In 1992, the railway line that went through Ultra was sold. A new company, the Tulare Valley Railroad, bought it. They continued to operate trains on the line for some time.
When the Railway Closed
However, the railway line eventually stopped being used. In 2009, it was officially "abandoned." This means trains no longer run on the tracks, and the line is no longer active.
