What Does Umán Mean?
The name "Umán" comes from the Yucatec Maya language. It can mean "purchase" or "your path" or "your walk."
A Look Back: Umán's History
We don't know exactly when Umán was first started. But we do know it existed before the Spanish arrived. Long ago, it was part of a local area called Ah Canul. When the Spanish took over, Umán became part of a system called encomienda. This system gave Spanish settlers control over land and the people living on it. Francisco Hernández was one of the first people to have an encomienda here.
Yucatán became independent from Spain in 1821. In 1825, Umán was made part of a larger region with its main office in Hunucmá Municipality. Later, in 1921, Umán became the main city of its own municipality. This means it got its own local government.
