UnCabaret is a unique comedy group based in Los Angeles, California. It creates live shows, TV programs, and web content. UnCabaret is known for its different style of comedy, focusing on stories and personal experiences.

How UnCabaret Started

UnCabaret began because a performance artist and comedian named Beth Lapides wanted a new kind of comedy show. In the late 1980s, she felt that regular comedy clubs were not offering what she envisioned. She started putting on shows in different places.

In 1988, Beth Lapides teamed up with writer-producer Greg Miller. Together, they launched UnCabaret at The Women's Building. This was the start of something new in the comedy world.

A New Kind of Comedy

In November 1993, UnCabaret found a regular home at LunaPark, a music club in West Hollywood. For seven years, every Sunday night, Beth Lapides brought together comedians. They developed a special way of telling stories and sharing thoughts.

Instead of just telling quick jokes, performers would tell personal stories. This style was different from the usual stand-up comedy. It allowed comedians to be funny by being themselves and sharing their unique experiences.

UnCabaret's Journey

In 1997, the TV channel Comedy Central created a special UnCabaret show. Beth Lapides hosted it, and many famous comedians appeared. These included Taylor Negron, Dana Gould, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin, Andy Dick, and Scott Thompson.

After LunaPark closed, UnCabaret moved to other venues. It performed at the HBO Workspace, The Knitting Factory, and M-Bar. UnCabaret took a break in 2008. However, Beth Lapides brought it back in 2012, and it has been active since.

UnCabaret on Screen

UnCabaret has created several projects for television and online platforms. These shows bring their unique comedy style to a wider audience.

TV Shows and Specials

In 2012, UnCabaret produced four episodes for Amazon. Beth Lapides, Mitch Kaplan, and Adam Salky were the main producers. Each episode featured a different group of talented comedians.

Some of the comedians who appeared included Greg Behrendt, Sandra Bernhard, Rob Delaney, Margaret Cho, Tig Notaro, and Garfunkel and Oates. These shows helped share UnCabaret's storytelling comedy with many viewers.

Other Cool Projects

Beyond its main shows, UnCabaret has developed other interesting projects. These projects also focus on spoken word and unique performances.

One show is called "Say the Word." It features original, true stories told by TV comedy writers. Writers like Cindy Chupack, Jay Kogen, and Winnie Holzman have shared their personal tales.

UnCabaret also created "The Other Network." This was a festival that showed TV pilot episodes that never made it to air. Famous creators like Robert Smigel, Conan O'Brien, and Judd Apatow introduced their unaired shows.

Listening to UnCabaret

You can also enjoy UnCabaret's comedy through radio and audio recordings. They have produced many episodes and albums.

From 2000 to 2001, UnCabaret made 100 episodes of "Radio UnCabaret." These were broadcast on Comedy World and Sirius Satellite Radio.

UnCabaret has also been featured on popular NPR radio shows. These include "This American Life," "All Things Considered," "Morning Edition," and "Marketplace."
