Union Bank Plaza is a very tall office building in Downtown Los Angeles, California. It stands 40 stories high, reaching about 157 meters (515 feet) into the sky. Construction of this impressive building started in 1965 and finished in 1968. Today, it is one of the tallest buildings in Los Angeles.

A Landmark in Los Angeles

Union Bank Plaza was the first skyscraper built as part of the Bunker Hill Redevelopment Project. This project aimed to rebuild and modernize a large area of Downtown Los Angeles. The building was designed in a style called the International style. This was a very popular way to design buildings around the world at that time.

What is International Style?

The International style is known for its simple, clean look. Buildings in this style often have:

  • Straight lines and geometric shapes.
  • Lots of glass and steel.
  • Flat roofs.
  • No extra decorations.

The idea was to create buildings that were practical and looked modern.

A Historic Building

In 2020, Union Bank Plaza was officially named a Los Angeles historic cultural monument. This means it is an important part of the city's history and architecture. It is recognized for its design and its role in the development of Downtown Los Angeles.

Inside Union Bank Plaza

The building is mainly used for commercial offices. Many different businesses have their workspaces here. It has 19 elevators to help people move quickly between the 40 floors. The building also uses a special system called induction units for its heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). This system helps keep the building comfortable all year round.
