What is the UIM?
The UIM is like the referee for all international powerboat races. It sets the rules for different types of boat racing. It also makes sure races are fair and safe for everyone.
This organization helps grow the sport of powerboating worldwide. It works with many countries to organize championships.
A Brief History of Powerboating
The UIM started in 1922 with just a few countries. Over the years, more and more nations joined. By 2017, about 60 countries were part of the UIM family. This shows how much powerboating has grown!
Many leaders have helped guide the UIM. The current president is Raffaele Chiulli from Italy. The secretary general is Thomas Kurth from Switzerland.
Exciting World Championships
The UIM organizes many different kinds of powerboat races. These races are held all over the world. Here are some of the main types:
Circuit Racing
- F1H2o: This is like Formula 1 for boats! These boats are super fast and race on a closed course. They can reach speeds over 200 km/h (124 mph).
- Other Classes: There are many other circuit classes like F2, F500, and GT-15. Each class has different rules for boat size and engine power.
Aquabike (Jet Ski) Racing
- This involves racing jet skis. Riders perform amazing turns and jumps on the water.
- The UIM holds World Championships and other series for Aquabike.
Offshore Racing
- Offshore races take place in open waters, like oceans or large lakes.
- These races are often longer and test the endurance of both the boats and the drivers.
- XCAT: This is a popular offshore class with powerful catamaran boats.
- This type of event focuses on endurance and navigation skills.
- It's less about pure speed and more about completing a long journey.
MotoSurf
- Since 2021, the UIM also includes MotoSurf.
- This involves racing on motorized surfboards. It's a newer and exciting part of powerboating.
- There are classes for juniors, women, and different types of boards.
Countries in the UIM
As of 2023, 58 different countries are members of the UIM. These countries are split into different groups:
- Asia: 14 members
- Oceania: 2 members
- Africa: 3 members
- Americas: 6 members
- Europe: 33 members
Many countries are "Full Members," meaning they have a big role in the UIM. Other countries are "Corresponding Members."
