What is the Anishinabek Nation?
The Anishinabek Nation is a political group that helps its member communities. It was officially started in 1949. Before that, its roots go back hundreds of years, even before Europeans arrived in the 1500s. This history includes the Council of Three Fires, a very old alliance of Anishinabek peoples.
The Anishinabek people speak their own languages. These include Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) and Lunaape (spoken by the Munsee Delaware Nation). In 2017, the organization decided to use "Anishinabek Nation" for most things. They only use "Union of Ontario Indians" for official legal papers.
How the Anishinabek Nation is Led
The Anishinabek Nation is guided by a group called the Leadership Council. This council includes a Grand Council Chief, who is the main leader. There are also four Regional Deputy Grand Council Chiefs. These leaders help represent different areas: Southeast, Southwest, Lake Huron, and Northern Superior. As of May 2022, the Grand Council Chief is Reg Niganobe.
In 2018, the organization changed how it was set up. This change created the four regional deputy chief roles. The Anishinabek Nation also has an Anishinabek Women's Water Commission. This group was formed in 2007. It gives advice on important water issues, especially concerning the Great Lakes.
Symbols of the Anishinabek Nation
The Anishinabek Nation has a special logo. It shows a stylized thunderbird. The thunderbird is a powerful and important symbol in many Indigenous cultures. This logo was created in the 1970s by an artist named Nick Deleary.
Anishinabek Nation Communities
Today, there are about 60,000 people who are citizens of the Anishinabek Nation's member communities. This number makes up about one-third of all First Nations people living in Ontario. The Anishinabek Nation works hard to support these many communities and their citizens.
