History of the APS
How the Police Service Started
On March 30, 1992, an important agreement was signed. It was called the Ontario First Nations Policing Agreement. This agreement was made between several First Nations groups. It also included the Provincial and Federal Governments. This agreement helped set up police services for First Nations communities.
In 1994, four First Nations communities decided to form their own police service. These communities were Garden River, Curve Lake, Sagamok, and Saugeen First Nations. They chose to create the Anishinabek Police Service. Before this, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) served these areas.
Where the Headquarters Are
It was also decided that Garden River would be the main headquarters. This location was chosen because it is in the middle of the province. This makes it a good central spot for managing the police service.
