Beausoleil First Nation (called G'Chimnissing in the Ojibwe language) is a community of the Ojibwe people. It is one of the many First Nations in Ontario, Canada. This community is located in Simcoe County, mostly on Christian Island in southern Georgian Bay.
As of 2018, there are about 2,587 people officially registered with the Beausoleil First Nation. About 614 of these people live on the reserve lands.
Beausoleil First Nation Lands
The Beausoleil First Nation has three special land areas called Indian reserves. Their main home is the Christian Island 30 Indian Reserve. This reserve includes Christian Island, which is a big island in Georgian Bay. It is close to the towns of Penetanguishene and Midland, Ontario. Two smaller islands, Hope Island and Beckwith Island, are also part of this reserve. These two islands are not lived on.
The First Nation also has the Christian Island 30A Indian Reserve. This smaller piece of land is located at Cedar Point, Ontario. It is about 7.5 hectares (18.5 acres) in size.
Finally, they share the Chippewa Island Indian Reserve with other First Nations. This reserve is about 3.1 hectares (7.6 acres) and is located in Twelve Mile Sound. It is about 27.5 kilometers (17 miles) north of Christian Island. All these lands together form the home base for the Beausoleil First Nation.
How the First Nation is Governed
The Beausoleil First Nation chooses its leaders through a system called the Indian Act. Leaders are elected for a two-year term. The First Nation's council includes a chief and six councillors. The current chief is Joanne Sandy.
The Beausoleil First Nation is also part of larger groups. It is a member of the Ogemawahj Tribal Council, which is a council for several regional Chiefs. They are also part of the Assembly of First Nations, which represents First Nations people across Canada.
Community Services
The Beausoleil First Nation provides many important services to its members. These services help the community run smoothly and support its people.
