Hope Island (Ontario) facts for kids
Hope Island is a small, quiet island located in Georgian Bay, which is part of Lake Huron. You can find it in the Canadian province of Ontario. It's the most northern of three islands in this area.
Discovering Hope Island
Hope Island stands about 187 meters (613 feet) above the water. Today, no one lives on the island, and there are no plans to build anything there. A long time ago, in the 1800s, a surveyor named Henry Bayfield explored the island. He was the one who gave it the name "Hope Island."
This island, along with its neighbors, Beckwith Island and Christian Island, belongs to the Beausoleil First Nation. They are the original caretakers of this land.
The Hope Island Lighthouse
In 1884, a lighthouse was built on the northwest side of Hope Island. Lighthouses are important because they guide ships safely, especially at night or in bad weather. Even with the lighthouse, some ships have had accidents near the island over the years.
