The Unionville area has a long history of education, starting with the Union Institute in 1886. Today, Unionville is home to several schools. A Look at Unionville's Past

The town of Unionville was first officially recognized by North Carolina in 1911. Town leaders used to meet in the Union Institute building. However, that building was later destroyed by a fire. Local leaders worked hard to get the town's official status back, and they succeeded in 1998.

Union County, where Unionville is located, was created in 1842. It was formed from parts of two other counties: Anson County and Mecklenburg County. The town of Unionville was built in an area called Goose Creek. This area was right on the old border between Mecklenburg and Anson counties. That old border followed what is now Unionville Road.

The Story of Union Institute

The Union Institute was started in 1886 by Professor Oliver C. Hamilton. Its goal was to provide education for the community. In 1885, local people helped build the school by giving materials and their time. The school taught students of all ages from Union County and even from nearby South Carolina.

Professor Hamilton left the school in 1898 but came back as the main teacher in 1904. The Union Institute began as a private school. In 1910, it was given to the county's board of education. The school was a two-story building located near where the Unionville Community Center is today. In January 1917, a fire completely destroyed the building. Students who escaped the fire managed to save the school bell from the second-story porch. This original Union Institute bell has been used by every Unionville School since. Today, you can see it displayed at the main entrance of Unionville Elementary School.

Unionville Town Hall

The Unionville Town Hall is located where Unionville Road and Unionville-Indian Trail Road meet. This building was first built as a fellowship hall for the Unionville Presbyterian Church in 1915. The main church building was destroyed by fire in July 1994. After meeting in the fellowship hall for five years, the church gave the building and land to the town of Unionville for public use. The very first town meeting held in the current town hall was on February 17, 2000.

Unionville's Community Spirit

Unionville is well-known for its strong community spirit. For over 70 years, the annual Unionville Barbeque has been held at Unionville Elementary School. This event is one of the biggest fundraisers for a school in North Carolina. Other yearly community events include a July 4th parade, a Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony, and community concerts called "Concerts in the Park" at the community center.

Unionville Lion's Club

The Unionville Lion's Club started in December 1970. Since then, it has been very active in the community and helps with many town events.

Sam F. Keziah American Legion Post

Unionville is also served by the Sam F. Keziah American Legion Post, known as Post 535. This group supports veterans and the community.
