The United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum (USOPM) is a cool museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. It opened on July 30, 2020. This museum celebrates the amazing Olympic and Paralympic athletes from Team USA. It's a place where you can learn about their inspiring stories and achievements.

How the Museum Started

The idea for the museum began a while ago. Construction officially started on June 9, 2017. Colorado Springs is a great place for this museum. It is already home to the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC). It also has the main United States Olympic Training Center. Many sports organizations are located there too.

What You'll See Inside

The museum cost $91 million to build. It is about 60,000 square feet in size. It is all about American Olympic and Paralympic athletes. You buy a ticket and then take an elevator to the third floor. From there, you walk down a winding ramp. This ramp takes you through different galleries. It also leads to a theater and a gift shop. There are no stairs on the main path.

Designed for Everyone

The museum is very easy to get around. It was built so that everyone can enjoy it. This includes people with different abilities. All exhibits are easy to see and use. The museum uses cool technology to help visitors. This includes captions and audio descriptions. There are also ASL translations. Special lanyards can make text bigger for those who need it. Team USA athletes helped design the museum. They made sure it was a great experience for all.

The Museum's Unique Look

The building itself is special. It was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. They wanted it to look like it was moving. From above, it looks like an athlete throwing a discus. The outside of the museum is covered with 9,000 shiny aluminum panels. Each panel is a unique diamond shape. No two panels are exactly the same. The museum is located in downtown Colorado Springs. You can find it where S. Sierra Madre Street and W. Vermijo Avenue meet.

Cool Things to Explore

The museum has many interesting items and activities.

  • You can see a full collection of Olympic Torches. These are from 1936 to today.
  • There is a complete set of Olympic medals.
  • You can see artworks by the famous artist LeRoy Neiman.
  • There are interactive sports games. You can try a 30-meter dash. You can also try alpine skiing or archery. Other sports include goalball, skeleton, and sled hockey.
  • You can experience a simulated Parade of Nations. This is like being in the opening ceremony!
