The Lake Placid Olympic Museum celebrates the history of the Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid. This includes the games from 1932 and 1980. It is one of the few museums in the United States dedicated to the Olympics.
The museum is part of the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority. This group helps manage and develop the Olympic sites in the Lake Placid area. Lake Placid was the only city in North America to host two Winter Olympics until Salt Lake City was chosen for the 2034 Games.
About the Museum
The museum was opened by New York State in 1994. You can find it inside the Olympic Center in Lake Placid. It's a great place to learn about the exciting history of the Olympic Games.
What You Can See
The museum has many interesting items from the past Olympic Games. One special item is the "Fram III" bobsled from the 1932 Olympics. This bobsled was missing for over sixty years before it was given to the museum.
You can also see the skates used by Jack Shea in the 1932 Games. He was a famous speed skater. The museum also has many items from the 1980 Miracle on Ice hockey team. This team's amazing win is a famous part of Olympic history.
Special Events and Recognition
The museum once hosted the Olympic torch as it traveled across the United States. This was before the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. The museum also helps with the Lake Placid film forum. Its collection even provided items for the 2004 movie Miracle. This movie was about the 1980 hockey team.
In 2005, the museum received the Olympic Cup. This is a very old award given by the International Olympic Committee. It honors groups that help promote sports and the Olympic Movement. The museum gets support from other Olympic programs in Lake Placid. These programs help make Lake Placid a popular place for visitors. Each year, between 25,000 and 35,000 people visit the museum.
