About the University
The University of The Bahamas has about 5,000 students. Over 12,000 people have graduated from UB or its earlier form. It is one of the biggest employers in The Bahamas, with about 700 teachers and staff. Most of the teachers are Bahamian.
The College of The Bahamas (COB) was the school before UB. It was created in 1974 by the government of The Bahamas. It brought together several smaller colleges and schools:
- The Bahamas Teachers' College
- The San Salvador Teachers' College
- The C. R. Walker Technical College
- The Sixth Form Programme of the Government High School
University Campuses
The university has three main campuses and many smaller learning centers across The Bahamas. The Oakes Field Campus and the Grosvenor Close Campus (for nursing) are both in Nassau. The Northern Campus is near Freeport on Grand Bahama.
The Northern Campus opened in 2011. It has classrooms, offices, a library, computer and science labs, and a cafeteria. More buildings are planned for the future.
New buildings are also planned for the New Providence campus. These include:
- The Small Island Sustainability Centre: This center will focus on how to keep small islands healthy and strong.
- The Franklyn Wilson Graduate Business Centre: This will be home to business studies for both new and advanced students.
Smaller campuses help students in other islands like Abaco, Andros, Exuma, and San Salvador. In 2014, the university also opened a farm-focused center in Andros.
Research and Learning Centers
The University of The Bahamas has special centers for learning and research. These include:
- The Centre for Continuing Education and Extension Services: This center offers classes for people who want to keep learning.
- The Abaco Center and The Exuma Center: These are smaller centers on other islands.
- The COB/Cape Eleuthera Institute: A partnership for special studies.
- Oral History Institute: This group collects and saves stories from people in The Bahamas.
- Confucius Institute: This center teaches about Chinese language and culture.
- Agricultural and Marine Science Institute: This institute, opened in 2014, studies farming and ocean life.
Research Centers
- The Gerace Research Centre: This center is on San Salvador Island. Scientists and students use it to study archaeology (old things), biology (living things), geology (rocks and earth), and marine science (ocean life). Over 10,000 researchers and students visit each year.
- The Bahamas Environmental Research Centre (BERC): Located in central Andros, this center helps people understand environmental issues. It started in 1995.
- The Marine and Environmental Studies Institute (MESI): This institute studies the ocean and environment. It helps The Bahamas manage its natural resources. It works with the government and other research groups.
- The Poultry Research Unit: This unit studies how to farm chickens in a way that is good for tropical islands. It is located on a 6-acre site near the main campus.
Harry C. Moore Library
The Harry C. Moore Library opened in 2011. It is a very large library, about 60,000 square feet. It has a law library, a computer area open 24 hours, an auditorium, classrooms, and study spaces. It also keeps important historical papers from The Bahamas. The library is named after Harry C. Moore, a kind person who gave money to help others.
