History of Upper Strasburg
Early Roads and Travel
Around the year 1790, a very important road was built. This road connected Upper Strasburg to Fannettsburg and then to Burnt Cabins. For many years, this was a main road for people traveling between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Today, parts of this old road are known as State Route 4004. It was once called Three Mountain Road or Horse Valley Road. Now, most people just call it Upper Strasburg Road.
How the Town Started
The town of Upper Strasburg was planned out in 1789 by a person named Dewalt Keefer. It became a helpful stop for travelers and their large wagons, called Conestoga wagons, as they crossed the mountains.
The first post office opened here by 1797. At first, it was simply called Strasburg. But by 1830, its name was changed to Upper Strasburg. This was done to make sure people didn't confuse it with other towns named Strasburg in eastern Pennsylvania.
Life in 1873
In 1873, Upper Strasburg was a busy little community. It had three churches where people could worship. There was also a hotel for travelers to stay. The town had a steam tannery, which processed animal hides, and a sawmill for cutting wood.
For shopping, there were two stores. The town also had many skilled workers, including two blacksmiths, two shoemakers, two cabinetmakers, a tailor, and a saddler. At that time, about 293 people lived in Upper Strasburg.
