Ures is a small city and a municipality located in the Mexican state of Sonora. It is known for its rich history and beautiful natural surroundings.

In 2000, about 9,553 people lived in the Ures area. By 2005, this number went down to 8,420. This change happened because some people moved away from the area. The main town of Ures had 3,959 residents in 2000.

  • Later, Francisco Vázquez de Coronado visited Ures during his expedition in 1540.
  • In 1644, a Jesuit missionary named Francisco París founded Ures as a mission. It was first known as San Miguel de Ures until 1665.

Becoming a Capital City

  • In 1823, Ures became the capital of Sonora.
  • However, it lost this title the next year when Sonora joined with another state to form "Occidente State."
  • Ures became a city at the end of 1838.
  • It served as the capital of Sonora again from 1838 to 1842, and then from 1847 to 1879.
  • After 1879, it became the center of a smaller administrative area.

  • During the end of the Second Mexican Empire in 1866, the Battle of Guadalupe happened in the Ures municipality.
  • On September 5, 1998, the state government honored Ures by calling it a "Heroic City." This was to remember its strong defense against imperial forces.
