Early Musical Steps
Urs started his musical journey very early, at just five years old. He sang in a choir and learned to play many instruments. These included the violin, clarinet, piano, guitar, and drums.
But his first steps into a music career were quite different! When he was fifteen, he joined a cover band. Later, at seventeen, he became the lead singer of a heavy metal band called "Conspiracy" in Luzern.
Urs's Singing Career
Becoming a Tenor
While singing in a rock band, Urs was also taking music lessons at the Academy for School and Church Music. His passion for classical singing grew, leading him to move to Amsterdam. There, he studied voice at the Sweelinck Conservatorium with Udo Reinemann, a famous German baritone.
Urs continued to improve his classical singing with private lessons from Swedish tenor Gösta Winbergh and French tenor Christian Papis. He sang in the choir of the Dutch opera and performed at the Salzburg Festival. Before joining Il Divo, Urs mostly lived in the Netherlands, singing in operas and with the Netherlands Opera Gezelschap (NOG).
Joining Il Divo
In December 2003, Urs Bühler became a member of the international music group Il Divo. The group also includes Carlos Marín from Spain, Sébastien Izambard from France, and David Miller from the United States.
Urs had an informal first audition with the group's creator, Simon Cowell. Simon simply asked Urs to sing for him without any music. Simon was very impressed by Urs's tenor voice and offered him a spot in Il Divo.
Their first album, Il Divo, was released in November 2004. It quickly became a huge success worldwide, selling millions of copies. It even reached number four on the US Billboard charts and sold five million copies globally in less than a year.
Their second album, Ancora, came out in November 2005. Il Divo's third album, Siempre, was released in November 2006. Their fourth album, The Promise, released in November 2008, went straight to number one in the UK.
